Information About Berkshire

Berkshire is a historic county in the South East of England. It is also often referred to as the Royal County of Berkshire because of the presence of the royal residence of Windsor Castle in the county; this usage, which dates to the 19th century at least, was recognised by the Queen in 1958, and letters patent issued confirming this in 1974.

Berkshire borders the counties of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Wiltshire and Hampshire, and is usually regarded as one of the home counties. Under boundary changes in 1995, it also acquired a boundary with Greater London.

One of the best and most popular historical sites is Donnington Castle, a 14th century building which was also a Royalist stronghold during the Civil Wars.
Fighting raged around the castle during the inconclusive Second Battle of Newbury on October 27th 1644, and it was besieged by the Parliamentarians from July 1644 to April 1646, when it was bombarded by cannons.

Here you will find lots of historical background concerning the castles, great houses, churches & other important buildings of Berkshire. Some are privately owned and some open to the public.
